Driving traffic to a website takes real effort, time and budget. Whether it’s Google Ads, local SEO or posting on social media, landing someone on your homepage is only half the battle. The real challenge is conversion.

If your site gets plenty of visitors but your inbox is quiet and your basket is empty, your design is leaking sales. Here are the five habits we build into every site to turn browsers into customers.

01

Speed sells

02

One clear action

03

Mobile first

04

Proof where people look

05

Shorter forms

01. Speed is your best salesperson.

Before anyone reads your heading or looks at your work, they wait for the page to load. If it takes more than a couple of seconds, many of them leave.

Google's research

As load time goes from 1 to 3 seconds, the chance of a bounce rises by 32%.

Every second you shave off makes it more likely people stay, browse and buy.

Quick wins

Make it lighter.

  • Modern imagesCompress them and use formats like WebP.
  • Fast hostingManaged, not bargain-basement shared.
  • Fewer scriptsCut plugins and trackers you don't need.

02. Focus on one call to action.

Visitors want guidance. Put “Call us”, “Read the blog”, “Download the PDF”, “Enquire now” and “Follow us on Instagram” side by side, all equally loud, and people freeze.

A high-converting page highlights one primary action above the fold, in a colour that stands out from everything else. Secondary actions become simple text links. If enquiries are the goal, that button belongs in your navigation and your hero.

03. Design mobile-first, not just responsive.

For most small businesses, the majority of visitors arrive on a phone. Yet plenty of sites are still designed on a big desktop screen and squeezed down for mobile as an afterthought.

Scroll

Plan the vertical flow.

Decide what someone sees on each swipe, in order.

Thumbs

Big, easy tap targets.

Buttons at least 48 by 48 pixels, with room around them.

Weight

Lose the desktop clutter.

Heavy visuals that slow phones down rarely earn their place.

A truly high-converting site feels like a native app when you open it on your phone.

04. Put trust where people look.

People buy from businesses they trust. A separate testimonials page rarely helps, because hardly anyone clicks on it. Weave proof into the natural path down the page instead:

  • Client logos just below your hero.
  • Short review quotes beside your prices.
  • Google reviews, Trustpilot or security badges near forms and checkouts, where nerves are highest.

05. Keep forms as short as possible.

Every extra field costs you enquiries. Asking for name, email, phone, company, budget, website and a full brief up front puts a wall in front of people.

Ask for the essentials (name, email and what they need) and gather the rest on a call. Or use a step-by-step form that feels quick, like our own two-minute quote.
