The true cost of DIY hosting, domains and IT support.

Cheap hosting and do-it-yourself setups look like savings. Here's what they really cost a small business in time, stress and lost sales.

For small business owners, doing your own digital setup is tempting. Cheap domains, website builders and low-cost hosting all promise to save you hundreds of pounds a year. But ask yourself: what is your time worth?

Spend a working day untangling a DNS error, renewing an expired SSL certificate or rescuing a crashed WordPress plugin and you haven’t saved anything. You’ve lost hours that should have gone on clients, sales and growing the business.

01. Domains and DNS: small settings, big outages.

Your domain is your address online. Its DNS settings send your web traffic, emails and integrations to the right places. One wrong TXT record or a misconfigured MX record can take down your email and your website in one go.

DIY domains also tend to expire. If the card on your auto-renewal declines, your domain can be snapped up by squatters, leaving you to buy it back at a premium or rebrand entirely.

02. Cheap hosting has a hidden price.

Bargain shared hosting puts your site on a server with thousands of others. If one is attacked or hogs resources, yours slows to a crawl. Unmanaged plans also mean no one is applying security updates.

If your site gets hacked, many hosts simply suspend the account to protect everyone else. You’re left with a blacklisted domain, a suspended page and a developer bill to clean up the malware.

03. SSL and email: the renewal trap.

SSL certificates

“Not secure” scares customers away.

Browsers warn visitors about sites without a valid certificate. Renewing them by hand is a repeat headache that’s easy to miss.

Business email

No SPF, DKIM or DMARC? Hello, spam folder.

Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 need these records set correctly, or your emails quietly land in your clients’ junk.

04. The real maths: DIY vs managed.

Here’s a typical month for a sole trader or small team managing it all themselves:

£10–20

Hosting

per month

£5–15

SSL and security add-ons

per month

4 hrs

Fixing things yourself

at £50 to £150 an hour, that’s £200 to £600

£215–635

The hidden monthly cost of DIY.

Before you count the stress, the lost enquiries and the evenings spent on hold.

Handing it to a dedicated partner turns all of that into one predictable monthly fee. Updates, DNS changes, email records, SSL checks and support are handled before problems happen.
